Sagar Science Centre

A Curiosity Hub for Students

Sagar Science Forum is planning to build Sagar Science Centre (SSC) with science labs facilitating hands-on experimentation, model making, and interactive discussions to benefit all the schools within the region. The centre will act as a hub for physical activity, raise curiosity amongst students, and facilitate interaction beyond the classrooms. Teachers will undergo training for low-cost model making and showcasing experiments to make science classes more effective and interactive.

The Science Centre will have laboratories, an auditorium cum lecture hall, a digital lab, a library, model making room, dormitories, and display areas in addition to other required amenities.

Benefits for the Region

Sagar Taluk in Shivamogga District has spread over 20 sq km, and it has over 158 Higher Primary Schools and 65 Higher Secondary Schools with over 15000 children studying. The adjoining taluks of Sorab and Hosanagar will also be served by the Science Centre, covering a radius of 60 km considering the transportation needs. Most of these schools lack equipped labs, and the students miss hands-on experience in science labs. If given an opportunity, budding scientists could emerge from these rural schools who have no dearth of intellect but are deprived of opportunity.

Location: Sagar-Shivamogga Road

Sagar is a city located in the Indian state of Karnataka and is also a sub-divisional and taluk headquarters. Located in the Sahyadri Mountain range on the banks of river Varada, it is known for its proximity to Jog Falls. It is at an elevation of 579m and has a spread of approximately 20 sq. km. It is at the heart of the serene Malnad region, humming with social, educational, cultural, and agricultural activities.

Adjoining Shivamogga – Sagar State Highway, in an upcoming layout, Sagar Municipality has graciously leased an area of 17250 sq. ft for building the Science Centre. It has easy access to all the places and an ideal location for the intended activities. Adjoining the leased location is a park area that provides lung space and could act as an extended activity arena for the children and public to spread science awareness.

Activities Organized at Sagar Science Centre

  • Continue with the activities of the Sagar Science Forum
  • 150-160 students from schools on rotation to be engaged daily
  • Model making workshops for teachers and students
  • Teacher training camps
  • Exhibitions and contests
  • Advanced experiments, skywatch, creativity workshops

Project Implementation Plan

  • Building construction – phase 1 in about 11 months
  • Model procurement and resource mobilization for experiments
  • Initial training of teachers in a boot camp
  • Identification and recruitment of Faculty and lab instructors
  • Establishing process and methods for lab experiments
  • Connect with schools and schedule interactions, and logistics
